En het poet var på besök i Southbank Centre i går kväll. Alice Oswald har fått en enastående hyllning av Jeanette Winterson, ni vet hon som självsäkert har sagt att hon är världens bästa författare. Så här uttrycksfullt beskrev Jeanette Winterson Alice Oswalds poesi:
‘Alice Oswald is making a new kind of poetry [...] she is in the front rank of writers, in poetry and prose, who are not content to work only with what exists already. She is a Nature poet, a spiritual poet, with the wildness of [Ted] Hughes [...] This is not the Nature of footpaths and theme parks, but the open space and untamed life that waits for us to find it again. Oswald finds it again – for poetry’s sake, and for ours.’
Alice Oswalds tidigare samlingar inkluderar Dart, som vann 2002 TS Eliot Prize, Woods etc. (Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize), Weeds and Wildflowers (Ted Hughes Award), A sleepwalk on the Severn (Hawthornden Prize) och senast, Memorial, som vann 2013 Warwick Priset för Writing. Eftersom hon är en mycket skicklig naturpoet och gårdagen tillägnades blåklockan, tycker jag det passar bra med dikten "Primrose".

First of April – new born gentle.
Fleeting wakeful on a greenleaf cradle.
Second of April – eyes half open,
faint light moving under lids. Face hidden.
Third of April – bonny and blossoming
in a yellow dress that needs no fastening.
Fourth fifth sixth – she somehow stands
clutching for balance with both hands.
Seventh of April and tiredness shows.
No rest for three days in unwashed clothes.
Asks (eighth of April) for a little water.
Asks asks until the lips dry out. No answer.
Ninth of April. Head flopped over.
Contorted with headache. Seated figure.
Twelfth of April – eyes half closed.
No light moving under lids. Tense pose.
April the thirteenth. Almost dead.
Face like wet paper. Hanging yellow head.
Still there. Still dying. Fourteenth of April.
Face fading out. Expression dreadful.
Fifteenth sixteenth. So on so on.
Soul being siphoned off. Colour gone.
April the seventeenth. Dead. Probably.
Skull in the grass. Very light and crumbly.

En annan författare med en gedigen meritlista är jamaicanskan Lorna Goodison. Hon besöker The Scottish Poetry Library den 27 juli.
Lorna Goodison (f. 1947) har vunnit flera utmärkelser för sitt författarskap i både poesi och prosa, däribland Commonwealth Poetry Prize, the Musgrave Gold Medal from Jamaica från Jamaica, the Henry Russel Award for Exceptional Creative Work från University of Michigan, och ett av Kanadas största litterära priser, the British Columbia National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction for From Harvey River: A Memoir of My Mother and Her People (2007).

The weeping Rainstorm from our reading book
bore strong resemblance to my sister Carmen,
her full head of hair whipping up great shocks
of black rain clouds; her tall, full body wedged
between heaven and earths birth passage
and rainfall her long eye-water on storm days.
She was own-way, headstrong Rainstorm; it said
in the reading book she looked with hard gaze
at careless clouds lollygagging above and made
it up into the heavens to beat them into shape,
that’s how she got stuck between sky and earth
and that’s why she weeps and why floodrains fall
Octobers and Mays. When she rails and complains
of her powerless state, it is the time of hurricanes.

Under två veckor i augusti spelas en poesi-pjäs på zoo i Edinburgh.

Against the Vacuum, by Sarah James

Leaves sway the sunlight, illuminate dust
on the dashboard. Flecks of skin: his, mine,
our children’s. Dead cells mingle in the vents.
Specks bounce from the speakers -
slight, almost insignificant, they cling
to the air, the plastic, its surrounding fibres.
We leave the shape of our handprints
dark in their cloistered whiteness,
let discarded lives travel with us.
