Summer reading [on] women's skirts

  Halvvägs genom de nordiska återblickarna så väljer jag att lyfta fram en antologi med isländska författare. Ingen av dem var med vid den Nordiska poesifestivalen i New York 1993 men boken gavs ut året efter.

  "Brushstrokes of blue" innehåller bidrag från åtta isländska författare, bland annat av Einar Már Gudmundsson och Sjón. De två har ju förekommit tidigare i bloggen så idag har jag valt två andra författares bidrag.

  Gyrðir Elíasson är isländsk författare och översättare. Han föddes 1961 i Reykjavik men är uppväxt i den lilla staden Sauðárkrókur på norra Island. Han började utbilda sig till lärare men efter debuten med diktsamlingen "Svarthvit axlabönd" (1983) har han ägnat sig åt sitt författarskap. Hans böcker har blivit översatta till ett flertal språk. Som översättare har Eliasson bland annat översatt verk av Richard Brautigan och William Saroyan till isländska.
  2011 tilldelades Elíasson Nordiska rådets litteraturpris för novellsamlingen "Bland träden" (2009, Milli trjánna) i översättning av John Swedenmark som översatt flera av Eliassons böcker. Källa: Alex författarlexikon

  Kristín Ómarsdóttir (f. 1962) är en isländsk poet som har publicerat dikter, noveller, romaner och pjäser. Hon uppmärksammades första gången för pjäsen Draumar á hvolfi, som vann första priset i Nationalteaterns dramakonkurrens 1985 och presenterades i Nationalteatret 1987. Kristíns verk har publicerats eller ställts ut i Island, Frankrike, Sverige, Finland och USA. Kristín har också deltagit i konstutställningar och samarbetat med andra artister. Källa: Wikipedia

Flowers fly from ships' foghorns and land on women's skirts and stick to them. If a woman is strong-tempered, loud-coloured flowers fly to her. If she is calm, mild and earth-coloured. If she is fun, giant open flowers. If she is quiet and stay-at-home, the forget-me-nots sneak up to her while she is asleep. And she wakes up wearing a nightdress with blue flowers. Gladiolas when a woman is mad. Pennywort if she is mean and clever. Every woman's time for roses will come if she waits. And fly-traps if she keeps a close watch on herself and her nearest. Wildly in love, women are covered with orange lilies, but if a woman is a girl who is a woman who is a girl who is always thinking about sex for the first time, mayweed settle on her skirt, comfort her/scare her, comfort her/scare her, comfort her/scare her. Flamingo plants come when a woman is growing old.
