Eyeing the poetry libraries

Den 13 april arrangerade tidskriften Modern Poetry in Translation en releasefest i The Poetry Library, Southbank Centre.

Modern Poetry in Translation 1/2016

Perhaps in the naked hills of Darsìa, by Gëzim Hajdari (f. 1957)
(Published in Modern Poetry in Translation, nr 1/2016.)

Perhaps in the naked hills of Darsìa
my fragile verses will be buried
under the dry thorns of the pomegranate tree
struck by the icy winds of the East.

Far from the young girls' loves
that will never know their anguish,
solitary under the black sky
like the robin in the darkness of winter.

The rustling of the grass, the blackbird's song
will accompany their lament.
While autumn's brief nights
will cover them with a pale moon.

Hon startade verksamheten i Tweeddale Court, 1984.

Edinburgh

August 3rd, by Tessa Ransford
(from Shadows from the Greater Hill. Ramsay Head Press, 1987.)

The hill is tossing high, frail wisps of
rosy cloud to glide in steady gale
along a turquoise sky, around, above the
perpendicular and slightly askew columns,
above the triangular gap
between crown and crag.

The moon, full at midnight,
is now high and faded
almost a lazy eyelid:
day’s eye opening
or night’s eye closing.

Birds chase and ride the wind
reeling, wheeling,
aware that in a moment
ordinary flight of day will have to be resumed.

The hawk alone is steady,
keeps position despite the gale
to pinpoint a victim

and far below
grasses tinge in flower:
harebell, yarrow, lady’s yellow bedstraw
Among the rangy thistles and fatted doves.

The Threshold, by Jo Shapcott (f. 1953)
(published in Poetry Society's website)

She Ping Sets World Record for Heaviest 'Insect Coat'

I waited all day for tears and wanted them, but
there weren’t tears. I touched my lashes and
the eyewater was not water but wing and fur
and I was weeping bees. Bees on my face,
in my hair. Bees walking in and out of my
ears. Workers landed on my tongue
and danced their bee dance as their sisters
crowded round for the knowledge. I learned
the language too, those zig-zags, runs and circles,
the whole damned waggle dance catalogue.
So nuanced it is, the geography of nectar,
the astronomy of pollen. Believe me,
through my mouth dusted yellow
with their pollen, I spoke bees, I breathed bees.
