Lessons to be learned and songs to be sung

Dahl antog utmaningen och skrev novellen "A Piece of Cake". Den infördes senare också i "Over to You" (1946), Dahl första novellsamling, där även övriga bidrag först varit publicerade i Saturday Evening Post.

"Kalle och chokladfabriken" (1964, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), hans kanske mest kända. Källa: Alex författarlexikon

Concerning Mike Teavee (first part), by Roald Dahl
(from Charlie and the chocolate factory. New York : A.A. Knopf, 1964.)

The most important thing we've learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is never, NEVER, NEVER let
Them near your television set -
Or better still, just don't install
The idiotic thing at all.
In almost every house we've been,
We've watched them gaping at the screen.
They loll and slop and lounge about,
And stare until their eyes pop out.
(Last week in someone's place we saw
A dozen eyeballs on the floor.)
They sit and stare and stare and sit
Until they're hypnotized by it,
Until they're absolutely drunk
With all that shocking ghastly junk.
Oh yes, we know it keeps themm still,
They don't climb out the window sill,
They never fight or kick or punch,
They leave you free to cook the lunch

The Giraffe's song, by Roald Dahl
(original from The giraffe and the pelly and me. New York : Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, 1985. This version from Songs and verse.
 London : Jonathan Cape, 2005.)

My neck can stretch terribly high,
Much higher than eagles can fly.
If I ventured to show
Just how high it would go
You'd lose sight of my head in the sky!

Additional unpublished verses:

This neck of mine is second to none!
A miraculous tower of fun!
It's so stretchy, I swear
That I have to take care
I don't bump my poor head on the sun!

My neck is a wonderful thing!
It goes out, it goes in like a spring!
Extremely elastic!
Completely fantastic!
It makes me so happy I sing!

Willy Wonka's song of the Oompa-Loompas, by Roald Dahl
(from Charlie and the chocolate factory. New York : A.A. Knopf, 1964.)

There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction they are going!
There's no knowing where they're rowing,
Or which way the river's flowing!
Not a speck of light is showing,
So the danger must be growing,
For the rowers keep on rowing,
And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing . . .
