The blue boat Winslow Homer |

Luck, by Langston Hughes (1902-1967)
(from The collected poems of Langston Hughes. Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., 1947.)
Sometimes a crumb falls
From the tables of joy,
Sometimes a bone
Is flung.
To some people
Love is given,
To others
Only heaven.

Nästa exempel är skriven av Kathleen Jamie. Följande citat är hennes eget, hämtat från samlingen "The tree house" (2004): Poetry is the place where we consider or calibrate our relationships – with ourselves, our culture, history.
The blue boat, by Kathleen Jamie (f. 1962)
(From Waterlight : selected poems. Saint Paul, Minn. : Graywolf Press, 2007.)
How late the daylight edges
toward the northern night
as though journeying
in a blue boat, gilded in mussel shell
with, slung from its mast, a lantern
like our old idea of the soul

A big clown-face-shaped cloud, by Kenneth Koch (1925-2002)
(From A possible world : poems. New York : Alfred A. Knopf, 2002.)
You just went by
With no one to see you, practically.
You were in good shape, for a cloud,
With perhaps several minutes more to exist
You were speaking, or seemed to be,
Mouth open wide, talking, to a
Belted angel-shaped cloud that was riding ahead.
