Skin sings when it hits the ocean

I det tredje inlägget från Elementary School spelas vindens melodi från öster, medan May Swenson ramar in sin vattenbild.

A Morning Dip (1916)
Paul Gustave Fischer

May Swenson föddes Anna Thilda May Swenson den 28 maj 1913 i Logan, Utah.

Water Picture, by May Swenson (1913-1989)
(from  Poems Old and New. Houghton Mifflin, 1994.)

Duck pond, University Parks, Oxford

In the pond in the park
all things are doubled:
Long buildings hang and
wriggle gently. Chimneys
are bent legs bouncing
on clouds below. A flag
wags like a fishhook
down there in the sky.

The arched stone bridge

is an eye, with underlid
in the water. In its lens
dip crinkled heads with hats
that don't fall off. Dogs go by,
barking on their backs.
A baby, taken to feed the
ducks, dangles upside-down,
a pink balloon for a buoy.

Treetops deploy a haze of

cherry bloom for roots,
where birds coast belly-up
in the glass bowl of a hill;
from its bottom a bunch
of peanut-munching children
is suspended by their
sneakers, waveringly.

A swan, with twin necks

forming the figure 3,
steers between two dimpled
towers doubled. Fondly
hissing, she kisses herself,
and all the scene is troubled:
water-windows splinter,
tree-limbs tangle, the bridge
folds like a fan.

Music of wind, by V P Mahur
(Published in Poemhunter.com)

The music of wind
When it comes from the hills
Echoes in the mind and thrills

The music of wind

When it comes from a desert
Ignites the passions to be alert

The music of wind

When it comes from the sea
Waves the hearts in a glee

The music of wind

When it comes from the rivers
The message of continuity it delivers

The music of the wind

When it comes from beloved's locks
Fills the heart with joyful shocks

The music of wind

When it comes from the eternity
Blesses the soul with the humanity

Burning my hand, by Eric Paul Shaffer
(from Lāhaina Noon. San José : Leaping Dog Press, 2005.)

ma Olowalu

               Night, and a small fire
burns with stars and a little wind.

Flames cast shadows on stone
               and flesh. Petroglyphs

               flicker in orange light,
fool me into wondering again

               if the planet is here
for me, my friends, my love.

Holding my hand over the fire
               till skin sings, I'm lost,

               yet I struggle to release
my own hand, close my eye,

free my breath, to extinguish
               what makes me human

               and alone, among stars
and everything else that is

               one indivisible dark
pierced only by points of light.

Clouds are shifting

Allt medan molnformationerna skiftar.

Thirst, by Laura Cronk
(Published in poets.org, 2015.)

Unclouded third eye and lush
red wings.  I’m pouring water
from cup to cup.

This is the water we are meant
to drink with the other animals.
There are daffodils by the water,

a road leading from the water
to the shining crown of the sun.
My white hospital gown—

off-the-rack and totally sane.
My foot unsteady, though,
heel held aloft, missing its stiletto.

Nine months sober emblazoned
on my flat chest in red
below girlish curls and mannish chin.

You can’t see my eyes.
You’ve never seen them.

When we breathe, by Simone Muench
(from The Air Lost in Breathing. Helicon Nine, 2000.)

Our breath is the color of absence,
sleet, the frozen pond behind a house
where catfish and water moccasins weave in
and out of the watery door of melting ice
like strands of hair, the delicate
husks of dead loves.

Clouds shift across the sky
in broken ice floes; sleet filters
through the silver pores of a screen door
with a wide gap where the wire frays—
a baseball thrown off course by a young boy
with wavy hair and a lopsided smile.

These are the entrances, exits
of our everyday lives where the boy
drowns, his forehead tapping against ice, while
a woman with white hair, unaware, chops
onions and a man lingers behind her, humming
a song that’s never had words.

Nedanstående dikt är hämtad från hans senaste bok, "Elsewhere or Thereabouts".

Age of fire, by Alasdair Paterson
(from Elsewhere or Thereabouts. Bristol: Shearsman, 2014.)

Don’t let it bring you down.
It’s not the smoke
from funeral pyres,
not crematorium deposit
on childhood games,
not another city burning,
not here, not tonight
though someone whispers
all fires are the fire.

It’s not oil flares
at the refinery,
not a red dwarf
tracked from the observatory,
not the sfumato
of Last Judgements;
just another humdrum done
day rolled to the furnace
in best sunset pinks and blues,
just another deathbed conversion
to the quattrocento.

Then there’s black space
and mouthfuls from our flask,
each one a five minutes’ heartbeat;
all fires the stolen fire
I think, as we walk
under the lamps
towards our own blaze.

Elementary school, part 1

Well Water, by Randall Jarrell
(from The complete poems. New York, Farrar, Strauss & Giroux [1969].)

What a girl called "the dailiness of life"
(Adding an errand to your errand.  Saying,
"Since you're up . . ." Making you a means to
A means to a means to) is well water
Pumped from an old well at the bottom of the world.
The pump you pump the water from is rusty
And hard to move and absurd, a squirrel-wheel
A sick squirrel turns slowly, through the sunny
Inexorable hours.  And yet sometimes
The wheel turns of its own weight, the rusty
Pump pumps over your sweating face the clear
Water, cold, so cold! you cup your hands

And gulp from them the dailiness of life.

The Red Essay and Other Histories (from Horse Less Press, 2015).

What Lucy Feels Like, by Claudia Cortese
(published in Pangyrus.com, augusti 2015.)

The air
inside a
leaf fist.
Not
October’s
burnt romantics
or tin aftermath
of rain,
haiku’s
mist through trees,
lone bonsai
on hillside green—
solitude’s calm
is not the air
I mean.
When you feel
mad at
world
which means
mad at
self,
there’s no
sweet alone.
Mid-summer sewer,
trash, rat dung
is the wind
I mean,
meaning—
I’m ugly
stupid
my cottage cheese
thighs
and bubble ankles
in one beige sock
one white.

Fire: love songs and descants (excerpts), by David Harsent
(from Fire songs. London : Faber & Faber, 2014.)

So heap these on: letters, cuttings, poems, diaries, notebooks,
the black reports, the days of want and waste,
the double-entry records that set love alongside flaw,
everything said wrong, everything said in haste,

The pages curl; the words are borne up by the smoke ...

The way this winter sun slant through the branches to bed
down in the fire, taking light, giving light; the way smoke rolls low across the garden and holds among fern and dogwoods; the way flame gathers faces from snapshots; the way it spoils,
in particular, my sight of you, yes, the way it spoils and sings.
...
