Shadows and Blackouts

Egentligen Robert Lewis, skotsk författare, född i Edinburgh.

My shadow, by Robert Louis Stevenson
(from A child's garden of verses. London : Longmans, Green, 1885.)

I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.

The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow—
Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow;
For he sometimes shoots up taller like an india-rubber ball,
And he sometimes gets so little that there's none of him at all.

He hasn't got a notion of how children ought to play,
And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way.
He stays so close beside me, he's a coward you can see;
I'd think shame to stick to nursie as that shadow sticks to me!

One morning, very early, before the sun was up,
I rose and found the shining dew on every buttercup;
But my lazy little shadow, like an arrant sleepy-head,
Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed.

Nu blir det naket i midnattens Brasilien.

Blackouts, by José Carlos Limeira
(Published in Qarrtsiluni, 2011. Translation: Bruce Dean Willis.)

We never fear the dark.
Finally, the fruits of our dreams,
we are whole and ripe
and
if we meet this night,
sensual woman of easy promises,
I will let down your hair
I will pull you tightly to me
in a way both improper and bare

São Paulo, the largest city in Brazil, during November 10 blackout, 2009.

Let the bigshot power-brokers
disconnect the circuit breakers
ration the source, reclaim our debt
from downtown to the outskirts, yet
let no one dare
look into a certain room
illuminated
right in the middle of the blackouts
because whoever does so will see
our corporeal nudity
united
full of light
radiance from within the night
a man a woman
and our sexes, desires
permanently ignited

The last in the park, by Ernesto V. Epistola
(Published in The Manila Times Online, 2013.)

Warm noon of autumn

When we are done talking
Of restless fickle flights of pigeons
Circling in the park
And of old men with half-closed eyes
Sitting sphinx-like in the sun

(Perhaps
It is a delicate game for old men
To play with bubble fragile thoughts
Of another autumn’s warmer noon
Perhaps)

And of seedy men
Playing millionaires
With their smiles
And of little children laughing

I shall touch your hand
But if no words come
Or if I merely stammer

About the leaves
Being in shades of flowers
(Perhaps
A leaf’s ambition is to be a flower
Perhaps)
You will understand

Here is the meaning of our only winter
Only spring
Only summer
In the last warm noon of autumn
When we are done talking
Of restless fickle pigeons
Circling in the park
Of old men
And of little children
Laughing in the park

Hjortkalvar i fridfull solgård

The Shining, by Lorraine Gane

(from The blue halo. Lantzville, BC, Canada : Leaf Press, 2014.)

Early morning in the forest
two fawns browse on wobbly legs in the underbrush,
look up in my direction with ebony eyes,
then back down to the ground.
One fawn steps across the path and then circles back
towards its mother on the ridge watching intently,
while the other, startled at the sound
of squawking geese near the creek,
folds down on all fours by the edge of the path,
white-speckled back trembling as I tip toe by.
Later, I see the same light around you,
and deep in the mouths of purple irises
that afternoon at Burgoyne Bay.
After dark you talk of your father’s final day
seventeen years ago, how you held his hand
for hours after he took his last breath
and when you ask if I’m afraid of death, I tell you no,
remembering the fawns that morning,
how the light haloed their new-born bodies
and washed the darkness from my eyes

It was an afternoon, by Erik Spinoy (f. 1960)

(First english version: Poetry International Website, 2010. Translation: Gregory Ball.)

It was an afternoon

of petrified hours
whiter still than bone
I was not

even twelve and something

sunlike rose upwards
threading these hot days
blankly together
therein

I went towards the river

following this rod
to biting trout
till there at once (the colour
of butter, caramel) lay

what in spring had been an elk –

antlers, pelvis and a ribcage.

Once it was all carried to the cabin
in the bundle of my poncho
I let father (when his angry
growl had faded)
kneel next to me
matching
measuring
till the dark
was blackboard black

for hours I had entered

my other world
with him.

Sanasar in daytime, Jammu Region, India

An evening in Sanasar (first half), by Yash Sharma (f. 1929)
(From Tale of a Virgin River. Monk Books, Mumbai, 2009.)

A melancholy evening sinks

into the bowl of Sanasar . . .

Trees of deodar and pine

waft through the chill
of a December evening,
like thousands of needles
piercing the body.

Darkness engulfs

the green meadow
and the government huts
surrounded by the hills
and the village
down below.

A poignant evening descends . . .

Silence and darkness

embrace everything
but the Dak bungalow.
Inside:
laughter and light.
Outside:
deodar and pine
sigh wistfully
like my daughter Seema.

In the corner of living

Hans första diktsamling , Only Lines, publicerades 1971. Den gav honom the National Book Development Council of Singapore's (NBDCS) första utmärkelsen för poesi 1976. Hans två andra samlingar, Down the Line och Man Snake Apple & Other Poems, som också gav honom samma pris 1982 och 1988 respektive, konsoliderade hans rykte som en av de litterära storheter i Singapore. absolute, by Arthur Yap
(from The Collected Poems of Arthur Yap. Singapore : NUS Press, 2013,)

morning is already late
in rounding the corner of living,
windowpanes of tiny raindrops
cling uncertainly, left from night rain.

strange you are asleep,
often waking so early
to see the leaves weave
skeins of cool air between trees
at the corner of these buildings.
i think i’ll get this in a picture,
hang it on a nail
& set the sky within its frame.

seeing,
i shall dispel dimness.
& sorry if i should awaken you;
i’ve gathered morning like a flower,
it doesn’t smell for me.
(i can tell by the cheer in your eyes
you’ve never quite learnt to believe).
later, & still later of the morning,
morning it is,
& absolutely nothing is wrong.

Hennes dikter har publicerats i flera antologier, inklusive Whetu Moana : Contemporary Polynesian Poems in English. Källa: New Zealand Book Council

Wednesday afternoon, by Karlo Mila
(from Whetu moana : contemporary Polynesian poems in English. Auckland, N.Z. : Auckland University Press, 2003.)

my father is “having fun”
cleaning the floor
he uses the plugged in sink as a bucket
wears rags on his feet
and shimmies to a cleaning beat
he asks me to read the label
on the bottle for him
he wants our floor to shine
and laughs when (surprise)
it does

this is how I will remember him
moonwalking across our kitchen floor
rags under his feet
“that’s how my mother taught me”
he says
“but I never take any note
it takes me forty years to do what she say”

The evening star (last two stanzas), by Porfirio Barba-Jacob
(english version published in Poetry International, 2006. Translator: Nicolás Suescún.)

...

You, who lying on the grass
facing the sky, suddenly say:
“The evening star is lighted”
Avid, my eyes look for its brightness
through the mist, and we ascend
by the thread of light…

                                    A cricket sings
in the regrown moss of the stone hedge
and a conflagration of stars rises
in your breast, calmly facing the evening,
and in my breast, in the evening, appeased…
